For the second time in four years, Baylor softball is headed to the Women’s College World Series!
Head coach Glenn Moore’s team kept the 2014 season going by upsetting No. 4 seed Georgia twice in Athens over the weekend in convincing fashion. Baylor ace Whitney Canion earned her 30th and 31st wins of the season, tying the program’s single season record; she was backed by three home runs from a Lady Bear offense that set a new school record for home runs in a season.
This marks the Lady Bears’ third College World Series appearance; Baylor also made the final eight in 2007 and 2011. Baylor, the No. 13 seed, will face No. 5 seed Florida in the first game of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament on Thursday at 11 a.m. (ESPN). All games will be played at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City; click here for ticket information. Let’s see some green and gold in OKC!
Of course, softball isn’t the only Baylor sport excelling in the postseason this spring:
- The Big 12 champion men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals (Elite Eight) for the 11th time in 16 years.
- The Big 12 champion women’s tennis team reached the NCAA Round of 16 for the ninth time in 10 years.
- In track and field, the Baylor men tied for 22nd and the women tied for 27th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March; they will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships next month.
- Men’s golf made its 17th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, finishing 10th at the NCAA Eugene Regional.
- In women’s golf, junior Hayley Davis tied for 10th at the NCAA Championship, the best NCAA Championships finish ever by a Lady Bear.
All told, to date, 2013-14 has brought Baylor a BCS bowl, two Elite Eights, two more Sweet 16s, and a College World Series appearance.
Sic ’em, Baylor softball and all Baylor sports!
